GRAPHIS NEW TALENT AWARDS 2024, GOLD

GRAPHIS BLOG FEATURE

The graphic style that initially inspired my chair was postmodernism. Fueled by the defiance of strict categorization, postmodern style often relied on the fusion of diverse influences and mediums, especially those which may initially seem incompatible. In doing so, this style challenged both designers and viewers to question traditional practices and established norms. A desire for simplicity had been replaced by a desire for extravagance. The postmodern mentality was perhaps best articulated by Robert Venturi, an innovative American architect who turned Van der Rohe’s famous adage on its head in his book Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, playfully proclaiming that “Less is a bore.” This transition marked a paradigm shift in the world of design, reflecting a growing desire for greater personal artistic freedom and the rejection of uniformity.

My chair embodies a celebration of individuality and an invitation to be boldly, authentically oneself. The transparent glass frame symbolizes the courage to navigate the world with full-hearted transparency, shameless and barefaced, while the vibrant red center serves as a display of inner boldness. Deliberately shaped with inward-curving arms, the shape of the frame mirrors the warmth of a self-embrace, providing the user with a sense of comfort and acceptance.
